The Essex Blades is the collective name for all of our Students' Union sports clubs and teams that represent the university; membership to all of our sports clubs are FREE! The badminton club have sessions catering for all abilites, from individual sessions for team members through to Just Play sessions that are available for everyone. They are an active club and have 4 teams which compete in the weekly Wednesday BUCS leagues. Bronze standard club.
The club provides a platform both students and non-students who are interested in learning the skills of boxing and wish to keep fit through boxing training programmes. There is also the opportunity to compete at the British Universities Championships as well as training for fitness.
The Climbing Club comprises a welcoming group of people enthusiastic about the the outdoors and all things climbing related- they train on an indoor wall in the sports centre however have several trips a year that venture outdoors! There is also the option to compete in bouldering at the British Universities Championships.
Club of the year two years ago, offer several different styles of dance from Latin and Ballroom, to Ballet and Street. Open to complete beginners and experienced dancers as well as everyone in between. Biggest club on campus (in terms of members). Options to both compete or just learn in one of our Gold standard clubs.
Friendly and sociable club who welcome players from all abilities, experience and nationalities. They have one team catering for all players, competing in the BUCS Southern Tier 2B league and are looking to battle for promotion. However there are other opportunities through Just Play programme to get involved in football! They are also one of our bronze standard clubs.
The club welcomes both women and men, and beginners as well as experienced players. Training twice a week, they compete in both regional and national competitions as well as just for fun!
People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it. The club is welcoming to all experiences with highly qualified coaches delivering sessions.
90% of the lacrosse players in past and present teams have never played before, it is clear that anyone can pick it up in no time! Both men and women play in weekly Wednesday BUCS leagues. Big or small theres a position for you on the lacrosse field utilising, strength, speed, agility and precision. They are a very social club, being nominated for social club of the year every year for the last 4 and winning it twice. Gold Standard Club.
Second biggest club on campus having classes are suitable for all abilities, from those who have never been on a pole before to those who are more experienced- great fitness but also give opportunities to showcase skills and compete against other universities. Silver Standard Club.
Rounders are into their second year of running and would love for you to be a part of one of the newest sports clubs on campus. Rounders is a fun sport that many people associate with their childhood, come and join in the well-beloved sport and be a part of a fun and exciting new team.
The Women's Rugby club are closely linked to the men's, they are a friendly and sociable team that train hard and play hard, shown by being nominated for both team and social club of the year last year. you don't need to have any previous experience, lots of the girls didn't and were taught everything they needed to know by qualified coaches and the national governing body!
Sub Aqua aims to share the underwater world with everyone. They facilitate all PADI courses from beginner to professional level, as well as dive trips in the UK and aboard.
Tae Kwon Do
Tae-Kwon-Do – A traditional Korean martial art, Tae-Kwon-Do improves: Agility, flexibility, speed, strength, stamina, reflexes and discipline with an opportunity to compete for the university.
Current Social Club of the year, one of the fastest growing mixed gender clubs over the previous few years by having a strong link with the local community and offering both indoor and outdoor sessions, regular tournaments and a Men's weekly league against other Universities. You could be the star of the pitch or the last pick at school, your past is exactly that, everyone starts on the same level in Ultimate!
Achery provides a great chance to experience and partake in a unique alternative sport with a competitive and social environment that is both welcoming and engaging. They have local, regional and national competitions that are open to all members of the club. Archery are also one of our Bronze standard clubs.
Basketball have social, competitive and high performance elements within the club. Depending on your level, it is easy to get involved. The men compete in National Basketball League Division 4 at the weekend and in BUCS tiers 1 and 4 every Wednesday. They also host internal leagues and Just Play drop in sessions.
Brazilian Ju Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focusing largely on grappling and ground fighting. It utilizes natural body leverage and proper technique to obtain dominant control on the ground. They train off campus at a local, dedicated martial arts gym (BKK fighters). Open to everyone!
The Essex Blades Cricket Club is a great club to be a part of during your time at the university, whether you’re an experienced player or you’ve never played before, we cater to all abilities.
Students have been fencing at the university for almost 40 years, making the club one of the oldest on campus. All equipment is provided and with qualified coaches the club is open to everyone training 3 times per week. 5 teams compete on a weekly basis in the British Universities and Colleges Leagues.
Indoor football played with a heavier ball that promotes the use of finesse and close control. Home to our only two premier league BUCS clubs (Men's and Women's 1st). Open to all abilities though with other teams and just play sessions, women play on Saturdays and men on Sundays.
One of the largest Essex Blades mixed gender clubs having 2 male and 2 female teams, competing in BUCS (on wednesdays) and Saturday league, with mixed hockey played casually across the year. They are also a very socially active, becoming a gold standard club last year for offering a variety of opportunities to their members.
The kick-boxing club is one of the Student Union's most popular clubs attracting lots of students every year, all equipment is provided, and is great for your fitness! More advanced fighters have the option to represent us in the Universities Combat League.
Full-contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports and martial arts including boxing, kick boxing, muay thai, freestyle/greco roman/catch wrestling, judo and brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) among many others. Club trains off campus at a dedicated martial arts gym (BKK Fighters).
Pool sports club that also emphasises on having a relaxing atmosphere; therefore people from all ability levels are welcome to join the club. We are based in the Level Up so you have the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends as well as enjoying a game of pool. THose who are more exerienced can compete at the BUCS 8-Ball Championships.
Rowing are a diverse club encouraging people to explore a sport which not many would have had access to before University. From just getting fit to competing all over the country, they have something to offer for everyone, in a dynamic and fun environment. They are a hard working group of people, with lots of training on offer and lots of socials!
As an active social club, they hold an annual skiing trip during the winter break and are looking to expand their offer to provide snowsports throughout the year at dry/indoor ski-slopes.
Swimming and Waterpolo
The Swimming and Waterpolo club is one which is for anyone and everyone. It offers those who are already established swimmers and waterpolo players the chance to train and compete aswell as offering those who are complete novices the chance to learn how to swim and play the game through Just Play.
The club holds training sessions for players of all abilities every week during term time. Tennis boasts a variety of men’s, women’s and mixed teams competing against other universities in BUCS and clubs in local leagues.
Trampolining is a unisex club which appeals to everyone regardless of your ability. They have highly qualified coaching that will help you to progress at your own level and learn new skills, which you are able to show off at the competitions they attend around the country. Trampoilining are a Brozne Standard Club.
The Athletics club is open to runners, jumpers and throwers of any level beginner to international. Train on and off campus with experienced coaches and local club links. They also have many social members who attend their fortnightly socials.
Basketball is a brilliant way to meet new people, since we do a lot of joint socials its also a great way to stay fit! We have two teams and always ensure that everyone who commits gets game time. The first team compete on Both Saturday's and Wednesday's, the 2nd team just on Wednesday's for BUCS.
The Essex Flames Cheerleading Squad compete at National and International levels. No experience is needed in joining the squad; you will be taught all the skills you need. If you are already an experienced cheerleader or gymnast, there are try outs for our higher level squads.
They also cheer for the Essex Blades American Football Team. As well as being a competitive squad, they have weekly themed socials which help them get to know each other. It doesn’t matter whether or not you’re a fresher, everyone is welcome to come along and give cheerleading a go! Cheerleading are a Gold Standard Club.
Fancy a riding at the olympic velodrome or BMX track? Regular socials, and rides for all interests, both social and competitive? Then the Essex Blades Cycle Club could be for you.
Men’s football is the biggest single gendered male club on campus. They have 5 competitive teams and a comprehensive social and intramural programme which is delivered through Just Play. The teams train on Mondays and Thursdays and play on Wednesdays in BUCS and Saturdays in the local league.
The University of Essex Golf club is open to anyone, whether you're a quality golfer, a weekend player, or if you've never held a golf club before! There are 3 competitive teams that play each week for the University, they train off campus, but have access to pro golfer sessions, driving range sessions and team training.
The aim of Jitsu is to teach anyone of any shape, size and gender how to improve their their self defence. There are opportunities to train twice a week and to also represent the university if you are experienced!
Having maintained a Silver Standard for the second year running Korfball provide a friendly and competitive environment for all players. Korfball train twice a week and have links with both local and national competitions should you wish to compete!
Current Essex Blades Club of the year. They have have 4 teams that play competitively outside of the university and 4 teams that play internally, also having girls that come just to play for fun! The club has something for everyone - socially and competitively. Gold Standard Club
we teach all abilities and riding levels. The club is hosted at Brook Farm in Alresford. The club also hosts friendly competitions and gymkhanas, where members can race against each other to earn prizes such as rosettes and money off lessons. The club also has two competition squads which compete against other Universities.
Men's Rugby are a highly competitive team, who always relish a challenge with a determined grin. They currently have three squads. Our First and Second teams both compete in BUCS competitions against other Universities. There is also the optin to play different codes, representing the University in League. This enables them to facilitate the needs of all player types, from lifelong rugby fanatic, to casual players who have never picked up an oval ball before!
Squash is one of the fastest sports and the club is an incredibly friendly group of people. All are welcome either as social or competitive players, there a 5 squads as well as internal leagues to keep things interesting, they are also a very active club socially. Squash are a Bronze Standard Club.
Table tennis are a friendly club with a diverse membership that welcome all levels of play from those with experience to complete beginners. There are 4 teams that play on Wednesdays across a variety of leagues so there is an option for everyone to play. Just Play also facilitates tournaments and drop in sessions. Table Tennis is a Bronze Standard Club.
Volleyball is a club with members from lots of different backgrounds and experience levels. Our first teams are some of the best in the country, however there is always opportunity to train and be involved at whatever level within the club. The Women's 1st team, are our current Team of the year.
Anime & Manga
We love Anime and Manga, as such we feel that it is our responsibility to share the medium that we all enjoy so much. The variety of different stories and genres that anime has to offer is amazing and we show a wide selection to give our members tasters of what else they can watch.
We're a brand new society, set up to get together all of our cosmic sciences fans on campus. We aim to share news about astronomy, as well as attending lectures on the cosmos, going on trips, and engaging in discussion on this topic.
Cheese & Wine
Cheese and Wine Society enables fellow students to share common interests whilst gaining knowledge of both regional and international produce. Through this society, students will be able to sample and enjoy wines and cheeses which they may not have tried before on a student budget or due to lack of confidence in this area.
The Debating Society is a society for students of all subjects to engage in lively debate. Debates will be on myriad topics; both current affairs, engaging to the politically minded as well as comical contests. Enthusiasm is valued over experience, and extensive knowledge of the subject is not required. Those who just want to watch are also welcome!

The Harry Potter Society aims to bring together fans of the Harry Potter franchise, whether this is from the books, movies, games or all three! From this we aim to hold different events for members, whether they be social, academic, sport or fundraising. These events can range from film screenings, guest speakers, HP related trips, house competitions, a Quidditch team and much more.
We are the sober friends of party goers or anyone who needs it, we give you someone to talk to, help you to get you back to your nice warm bed or a safe bed for the night. We also help relocate lost friends or lost items if we can. We also currently provide free bottled water to anyone who wants it.
The Public Speaking Society proposes to provide its members with the skills necessary in order to communicate their ideas in public. The Society also aims to help the members build confidence in expressing their ideas in a clear manner. We collaborate with Toastmasters International - a society aimed at improving the speaking skills of its members around the world.
St John Ambulance
We are the university based division of St John Ambulance, the UK’s leading first aid charity, which has been working on campus for 10 years. Learn life-saving skills and volunteer! Our society revolves around first aid training, providing first aid cover at events and socials ranging from all-campus treasure hunts to gatherings in Top Bar on campus!

Essex Bright Futures is an award winning student-led society, focused on helping students from all degree disciplines to maximise their skills and boost their employability through year-round collaboration with industry. Focusing on contacts from the City, as well as portfolio and market analysis. Various events with companies and speakers from Banking and Finance especially from the City. Investment & Trading Skills society will bring better understanding of specific sectors in Banking and Finance as well as key skills needed securing a job in each sector.
Origami is the Ancient Japanese Art ofFolding Paper. Join our small but growing community where you can turn unwanted essays into Art. We organise teaching sessions, as well as social events for our members to meet other individuals interested in this beautiful art!
Roleplay and Gaming
The Role Playing Society sets up gaming groups to play a variety of pen and paper role playing games, ranging from D&D 3rd/4th edition, World of Darkness, Wushu and some other specialist games. We also play board games such as Arkham horror, Battlestar Gallactica and Small World. There is a card game group that is also set up at the beginning of the year for members that play Magic: the gathering.

Enactus is a global organisation that considers the relevant social and economic factors to effectively empower people in need through business and economic concepts. At Enactus Essex we have three international and two local projects which are being led by dedicated project leaders with clear aims and goals, to help the overall work of Enactus International.

The Paintball Society aims to organise trips for paintball fans, as well as provide opportunities to try out something new, for those who may not have tried this awesome game!

The society is a fantastic place to meet new people from different backgrounds and to make new friends. This is the society for anyone who loves film to come along and explore all that cinema has to offer - We show a range of art house and independent films from all around the world, from the 1920s to the present day, hoping to share interesting, thought provoking stories of all different genres and presented in a variety of forms.

The University of Essex Graphic Novel and Comic Book Film society was set up by a group of like minded film and comic book fans, who thought it was about time that the University of Essex had its own society dedicated to graphic novels and films spawned from comic books.
We aim to promote creativity on campus, providing opportunities for students interested in different art forms to express themselves. We also provide opportunities for students to meet up and socialise with other creative minds.
We aim to get a community together to promote natural hair on campus. We also buy in natural hair products to sell on to students, as well as bring trained individuals in to help show students how natural hair is best!

TAS is not just a society but a group of friends who support each other and create together. Experience is not important and neither is the course you're studying.
The Film Society is a fun and friendly society, allowing anyone and everyone to enjoy a weekly film screening and lots of special events throughout the year. For only £5 a year! We’re looking forward to sharing some new releases plus some of our favourite classics, and can’t wait to get started on our fundraising and volunteering projects.
The Photographic Society gives you access to digital and analogue photographic equipment, training sessions and socials. Our members have free access to a fully-equipped studio and darkroom for film processing and we run a wide range of competitions. We also offer volunteering opportunities for photographers to test and develop their skills through gaining experience!

The Korean Society is a welcoming community whose members share an interest in Korean culture, music, art, film, cuisine and much more. The Portuguese Speaking Society aims to bring together all students from the 5 continents that speak our language (Portugal, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Angola, Guinne Bissau, Sao Tome e Principe and Timor). However, we are not limited to native speakers, we strongly welcome those who are learning to speak the language or are simply interested in learning the language and culture.
The Saudi Society aims to familiarise the university community about Saudi Arabian culture, and provide some services to society members such as give newcomers some short training courses (e.g., how to live and cope with the new society, how to overcome life's problems such as culture shock, how to follow and apply UK law in campus or of campus).
The Azerbaijani Society of the University of Essex unites all Azerbaijani Students of the University of Essex studying on different majors. The Chinese Students and Scholars Association (also known as CSSA-ESSEX) is a non-profit and non-political student society. It is the largest official Chinese student society on campus. BruEssex is a society of Bruneians from Brunei, a small country in Southeast Asia, with a tradition of making Bruneian feel home in the United Kingdom. We want to continue this tradition by having BruEssex as a union of diversely talented and skilled Bruneians from our university campuses at Colchester (main campus), Southend and Loughton.
One of the most popular and active societies on campus the Cypriot Society is a part of the cultural societies. Being committed to the efforts of the people of Cyprus in reunifying the island our society promotes aspects of the Cyprus Question always with reference to approved brochures published by the Press and Information Office of the Republic of Cyprus.
Hellenic Society is ideal for Greek and non-Greek students to join because it covers a wide range of events. Entertainment, sport and cultural events are held on a monthly basis by the society and the members have several benefits, like cheaper prices and the chance to win prizes. For non-Greeks we organise Greek Language courses which are free of charge with membership!
The JapanSociety (JapaSoca) is a society aiming to celebrate Japanese culture in the University of Essex. You don't have to be Japanese to join us - JapaSoca is open for everyone interested in Japan, whether that is the language, culture, films, anime, cuisine and so on! The society offers weekly language classes and film showings, as well as other activities throughout the year.

The Bar Society provides opportunities and events for legal minds considering a career as barristers. We organise mooting training, trips to london, as well as social events to network with students with similar interests.
European Law Students Association
ELSA (The European Law Students' Association) is the world's largest independent law students association. It has consultative status with several United Nations bodies such as UNESCO and UNCITRAL, observer status with WIPO and has participatory status with the Council of Europe. ELSA strives to increase international understanding and cooperation between law students and young lawyers
The Linguistics Society is a departmental society, aimed at any students studying in the linguistics department, but also those who have an interest in the science behind languages!

Politics Society aims to help both students in the department of Government, and those simply interested in Politics. The Occupational Therapy society looks to organise social events to help members meet new friends and network. We also coordinate academic trips and events such as visiting the COT library in London, hosting a journal club and guest speakers. The University of Essex Choir was founded in 1977 and is made up of about 150 singers. Its membership is drawn from staff and students of the University and from the local community. Since 1981 the conductor has been Richard Cooke. The students of the university make up about 1/5 of the Choir. The Choir performs concerts three times a year.
Music Production Society
Music Production Society is for individuals who either want to learn or share a passion for producing music. We aim to build a society where music enthusiasts have a location to meet and share ideas.
Our University has strong metal roots going all the way back to 1978 when AC/DC played what is now Sub Zero. Add to this the thriving metal scene in Colchester that has included recent tours from the likes of Paradise Lost, Dragonforce and Black Stone Cherry alongside frequent metal at the local pubs, and you will have no problem keeping your life suitably HEAVY. The Music Society is for people who play instruments, sing, want to learn to play an instrument or just love music. It offers musicians practice spaces and a wide array of equipment as well as hosting regular meetings and socials to bring together people who share similar music interests providing them with the nessecary space and equipment to jam and form musical relationships.

Essex Young Independence
Young Independence (YI) is the youth wing of the political party UKIP and represents all members of UKIP under the age of 30. Their current goals are to ensure that there is a fair, free, and open debate that each student can access a wide range of opinions in order to decide on their own educated conclusion in time for the EU Referendum in 2017.

Palestine Solidarity Group
The Palestinian Solidarity Group is a group of students from all over the world committed to raising awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people on campus and locally. We aim to acquaint people with the oppression of Palestinians by highlighting the historical events and the role of Zionist ideology in shaping the current situation through society discussions, documentaries and hosting speakers.
Conservative Future is the movement for under 30s, including all members of the Conservative Party of this age. Conservative Future is the largest youth political organisation in the UK. The organisation is all about involving young people in politics and addressing the issues that matter to them.
The Feminist Society aims to encompass all forms of feminism and bring us all together and united as one! We work better together, and to overcome oppression and liberate ourselves we must work as one.
LGBT & Friends
The LGBT & Friends society was established over 40 years ago, in hopes of providing unforgettable experiences for the students at University of Essex who identify as LGBT*. Today, we organise events, campaigns, and celebrate key LGBT dates to both educate and involve students on campus about what it's like to be an LGBT* person.
Zapatista Solidarity Group
Our group stands in solidarity with the Zapatista struggle, based on the Maya Indians from the south of Mexico. In their fight for education, freedom, democracy and dignity, they emerged as one of the international symbols of anti-capitalism and made possible movements such as “Occupy” and “Los Indignados”. Join our talks, discussions and direct actions in support of the Zapatistas and all the struggling for a more just world.
Essex Young Greens
The Young Greens is the student arm of the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW). Green Party policies aim at building a more economically, socially and politically equal and environmentally sustainable society, and this society is for students who agree with all of the above!!
The Human Rights Society was created so that students could discuss and share thoughts about human rights issues. At our meetings students can express their interest in a particular human rights issue in a specific country/place, which we then discuss as a group. We believe this is one of the best ways of learning about the real and personal implications of violations of human rights.

The Adventist Society is a Christian society. Seventh-Day Adventist is a Christian denomination distinguished by its observation of Saturday as the Sabbath. We also emphasise the second coming of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
Chinese Christian Fellowship
CCF are a group of Chinese students who are interested in Christianity and gospel, which has existed at Essex since 1997. We pray, sing hymns, study the Bible, watch movies, play sports, share food, and take trips to various places like Cambridge. But most important of all, we share our thoughts and love among the brothers and sisters.
Jesus Alive Fellowship
Jesus Alive Fellowship society (JAF) is a Christian fellowship group. Our foundation is found in Matthew 6:33, in which we are reminded to seek God first in all we find ourselves doing, through keeping Him at the centre. JAF is a large Christian community where students can find a support network and encourage each other during their time at University.
Believers Love World
Believers' LoveWorld Campus Ministry is the youth arm of Believers' LoveWorld, a unique and dynamic ministry called by God to play a chief role in the end time move of the Spirit. Our Vision is to carry God's divine presence to all the people of the world, demonstrating to them the character of the Spirit.
In essence, we are a non-denominational group of Christians aiming to share the Good news of the saving Grace of God through his Son Jesus Christ. We welcome both Christians and non-Christians, whether you're a Christian seeking to grow further in the love of God, or you're a non-Christian that has questions about who God is and what we believe.
